Basilica di San Francesco One of Assisi's most famed attractions, this Basilica consists of two separate churches, both of which were consecrated by Pope Innocent IV in 1253. Built in honour of St. Francis of Assisi, whose coffin is on display in the Lower Basilica, both churches, although very different in style and feel, are architectural marvels and house some of Europe's finest frescoes. Although the layout of the Upper Basilica is an exact replica of its Lower, and half-century-older counterpart, the style is much lighter and more airy than that of the original church. Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli This church began construction in 1569 and continued until 1667, with the bell tower being added in 1684. After an earthquake caused the collapse of the church's central nave, the church was remodeled to take on a neo-classical style, but later returned to its original neo-baroque style in 1928.
