Errected in 1174 as German feudal castle, this structure is also associated with Emperor Frederick II of Swabia who spent part of his childhood here. Restorations on the crumbling building took place in 1367, and in 1458 Jacopo Piccinino, then lord of Assisi, added the 12-sided tower and long curtain wall connecting the castel to the city. The tower near the gate was errected between 1535 and 1538 by Pope Paul III.
